|The CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader is bringing forward the idea of a nuclear defense system. This has been sharply criticized within the SPD – especially by former parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich. Chancellor Friedrich Merz also supports nuclear deterrence. This gives the coalition a new point of contention.
The debate within the coalition over the state of Germany's defense capabilities in light of the geopolitical challenges is intensifying. Union parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn ( CDU ) is encountering opposition from his coalition partner, the SPD, with his call for Germany's own nuclear shield. "Jens Spahn is playing with fire when he calls for European, possibly even German, nuclear weapons," foreign policy expert and long-time parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich told the Süddeutsche Zeitung . "The talk that Germany, too, must push the button is a veritable expression of adventurous, self-important thinking." Mützenich emphasized: "Jens Spahn is a wrong-way driver, not only in domestic policy, but now also in foreign policy."
